The Third Intifada
Israel is faced with a new generation of terrorist, 10 years ago the Muslim leaders filled young people’s minds with the glory of death – the rewards of a suicide bomber seventy virgins. Perhaps this did not go very well for the women who joined the ranks of suicide terrorist, maybe they would receive 70 male slaves. Whatever the reasoning behind the change in tactics it is sure that today’s Palestinian youth has moved to a different form of terror, one that supposedly limits the risk of death to themselves.
Now the weapon of choice is the automobile itself, no longer rigged with explosives instead the car has become the weapon to inflict massive injuries to its victims and even death. This form of terror tactic has also gripped the minds of Jerusalem’s residents for both tourist and locals alike are continually looking over their shoulders fearful that they may become the next victim.
As I walk the streets of Jerusalem or even in the old city an unexpected sound of racing motor causes people to quickly look for the nearest protection – a stone wall or barricade. I have also noticed to the delight of Palestinian youth that watch the orthodox Jewish men scurry across a road, obviously concerned for every vehicle that passes. These Palestinians often holler at the orthodox men “run Jew run!”
Three people have now lost their lives to this new form of terror and nearly 30 seriously wounded. The latest attack was on soldiers and quite frankly they are at great risk, standing in the roads or on the edges trying to protect the rest of the non-Arabic community.
