What’s the Big Deal about a Covenant Anyway?

Marriage, one of the most sacred institutions created by God. For many today, marriage is often not viewed in the same light or seriousness and is often tossed around like a hot potato by the growing majority of people that can only hold onto it when times are “for better”.
In the book of Hosea, God tells the prophet to enter into a marriage covenant with a whore. This was to help convey God’s displeasure with Israel’s whoredom in connection with their covenant arrangement made in the wilderness when Moses was leading them. Proof of God’s role as Israel’s husband is captured by the prophet Ezekiel.
- When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, and you became mine. Ezekiel 16:8
- “Therefore, O prostitute, hear the word of the Lord: Thus says the Lord God, Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your whorings with your lovers, and with all your abominable idols, and because of the blood of your children that you gave to them, Ezekiel 16:35-36
There are a few interesting things to possibly glean from these three scriptures. First, what was Adam’s covenant and why was it equated with God’s covenant with Israel? Adam’s covenant was obedience to what God commanded him to do in the Garden of Eden. Israel’s whoredom with idolatry broke the covenant Torah they were given on the Mount at Shavuot (AKA Pentecost) and both are connected with a type of marriage relationship with God. It is no coincidence that at the end of the Bible after the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (with those that keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Yeshua) that man is back in perfect covenant relationship with their Husband and has access again to the Tree of Life.
The peril society is faced with today with marriage becoming a fad and forgotten practice, could one day end up having large spiritual implications. Keep in mind the spiritual marriage that Adam and Israel had with God had to do with their worship and obedience to Him which equated the real love God desired.
You cannot go to a grocery store or search the news without hearing of another famous person getting or giving in marriage. Following my last article about the ecumenical and interreligious stew that is simmering, it looks like society could be at a very important fork in the road to determine will they follow only what is written and commanded in the Bible or throw it all out for the sake of worldly love, traditions, peace, safety and convenience?
Whether it be this generation or not, in the future a large portion of man will engage in a costly marriage covenant with someone appearing to be an angel of light. Unfortunately, some will pledge allegiance to this false angel and risk their eternal soul for the comforts they will be provided. The good news is there will be a remnant that does not waver no matter the earthly cost in keeping all the elements of their covenant with their Heavenly Husband by the Spirit. That Spirit that will be in His Bride at the end of the Bible was also given on the same day the original covenant was given. Call it a sort of vow renewal ceremony helping the Bride do a better job of abiding by the agreement when they said –
All the people answered together and said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the LORD. Exodus 19:8
As we ended the last post with an admonition to watch, we do so again with another item that will quickly be here before you know it. In 2017 on the date that is supposed to be a celebration of the marriage covenant/vow renewal with God on Shavuot/Pentecost, the man the world is getting behind to make peace deals (U.S. & Cuba) invited the world’s Charismatics for a giant celebration on Pentecost 2017 at the Vatican. Could this be a covenant type of ceremony agreeing to some common vows that may not be found in the Bible? Only time will tell. But for a public figure that has tried in some ways to be seen by cameras emulating acts of Jesus (like washing feet) and merging religious prayer together, people need to be sure they are watching and reading the terms themselves of the right marriage covenant with the right Husband.
Lastly it is interesting to note that Hoshea (AKA Joshua) led the covenant-abiding Israel into the Promised Land, Hosea was a picture of Israel’s Heavenly Husband forgiving a formerly whore Bride and Yeshua, the Lamb marrying the covenant-abiding Bride all are a form of the same name meaning salvation.
So from the beginning of the Bible to the end salvation and marriage are key themes that God’s people need to follow Him and not the winds of the world. After all that false angel of light that gets some people to accept a false marriage covenant ends up here –
The devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Revelation 20:10
He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Psalms 2:4
